About SOMA

Where ancient
medicine meets
modern science.

SOMA is short for somatic — derived from the Greek word soma, meaning body. In clinical practice, somatic refers to the physical body and its systems: the very foundation of everything we treat.

The name is intentional. This practice exists on the belief that the body is not a problem to be managed — it is a system to be understood. You only have one. Take great care of it.

SOMA is currently a telehealth practice serving clients nationwide, with in-person acupuncture services available in Austin, Texas.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture works by normalizing the structures beneath the needle. In tight or restricted muscles, it instantly relaxes tissue allowing oxygenated blood to flow in and flush out accumulated inflammation. This increases range of motion, decreases pain, and restores normal function to the area. Beyond the local effect, acupuncture communicates with the nervous system directly, signaling a shift from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic (rest and repair) activity. This is why patients often report improved sleep, digestion, mood, and energy alongside their primary reason for coming in the body functions as a whole system, and acupuncture treats it that way.

Most people are surprised by how little they feel. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin nothing like the needles used for injections or blood draws. You may feel a brief sensation of pressure, warmth, or a dull ache when the needle reaches the right depth, which is normal and often described as satisfying. Many patients fall asleep on the table. If something is uncomfortable, it can always be adjusted.

It depends on the condition, how long you've had it, and how your body responds. Acute issues a recent injury, a cold, a tension headache often respond in 2–4 sessions. Chronic conditions that have been present for months or years typically require more consistent treatment over a longer period before lasting change takes hold. A general rule of thumb: the longer something has been there, the longer it takes to fully resolve. We'll reassess regularly so you always know where you stand and what to expect.

Feeling better is the beginning, not the finish line. When you've been in pain for an extended period, your tissues become sensitized more reactive to inflammation, movement, and stress than they would normally be. Returning for supportive care gives your nervous system the time it needs to fully recalibrate and prevents the patterns that caused the pain from resurfacing. Think of it like physical therapy: the absence of symptoms doesn't mean the underlying tissue has fully recovered.

It depends entirely on the individual. Those who've experienced chronic pain for months or years typically benefit from coming in every 3–4 weeks. Those with lighter or more occasional concerns may only need to be seen every 6 weeks to 3 months. Supportive care creates a regular reset for your nervous system not unlike bringing your car in for scheduled maintenance. It keeps things running well and helps catch smaller issues before they become bigger ones.

That depends entirely on your health goals. Our bodies are mechanical, electrical, fluid-filled, and structural and like our homes and cars, they require ongoing care to function at their best over time. No one expects their car to run indefinitely without maintenance. Some patients choose to come in only when something comes up. Others find that regular care keeps them performing, feeling, and sleeping better and decide that ongoing support is worth it. There's no right answer. It comes down to what you want for your health long-term.

The tool is the same both use thin filiform needles inserted into the skin and sometimes the muscle. But the approach and scope are different. Dry needling is primarily symptom-based, targeting trigger points in muscles and joints for local pain relief. Acupuncture is more systematic it works within a comprehensive medical framework that has been refined over thousands of years and can address a wide range of conditions including hormonal imbalances, digestive dysfunction, mental-emotional health, fertility, and more. Acupuncturists complete significantly more clinical training specifically in needle technique and meridian theory than the courses required to perform dry needling.

Before: eat a light meal, stay hydrated, and wear loose comfortable clothing. Avoid coming in on an empty stomach. After: rest if you can, drink plenty of water, and avoid intense exercise, alcohol, or anything overly stimulating for the rest of the day. Some people feel energized after a session; others feel deeply relaxed and tired. Both are normal responses as your body integrates the treatment.

Functional Medicine

Conventional medicine is exceptional at diagnosing and treating acute illness and emergencies. Functional medicine operates differently it asks why. Rather than matching a symptom to a medication, functional medicine investigates the underlying systems that produced the symptom in the first place: gut health, hormonal balance, nutrient status, genetic variants, environmental exposures, and lifestyle factors. The goal is to address the root cause, not just manage the output.

Yes and this is one of the most common reasons patients seek functional medicine in the first place. Standard reference ranges are designed to identify disease, not optimize function. A value can fall within the "normal" range while still being suboptimal for your body. Functional medicine uses tighter optimal ranges, broader test panels, and pattern recognition across multiple markers to find what conventional labs routinely miss.

Your primary care doctor plays an essential role and SOMA is not a replacement for that relationship. The difference is time, depth, and approach. A typical primary care visit is 15 minutes. A SOMA consultation is a focused, unhurried conversation about your full picture. We order tests that most primary care offices don't run, interpret them through a different lens, and build protocols that address lifestyle, nutrition, supplements, and function not just pharmaceuticals.

No referral needed. You can book directly through the website. Start with a free 15-minute discovery call if you're not sure which service is the right fit it's a no-pressure conversation to figure out where to begin.

It depends on the complexity of what we're addressing and how long it's been present. Some patients notice meaningful shifts within the first few weeks of implementing a new protocol. Others particularly those addressing chronic, layered conditions find that real change unfolds over 2–3 months as the body recalibrates. Functional medicine is not a quick fix. It is a process of understanding and addressing the actual cause, which takes time to do properly.

Absolutely. Functional medicine and acupuncture are not women's health services they are whole-person medicine. Men come to SOMA for gut health, metabolic concerns, sports performance, pain management, hormone optimization, energy, and more. All services are available to patients of any gender.

Logistics & Getting Started

However, HSA and FSA funds can typically be used for acupuncture and functional wellness services, and we can provide a superbill upon request for you to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. We recommend checking with your provider about your out-of-network benefits before your first appointment.
